RESCUED: 16-Year old girl from the Bay Area
Danica, age 16, went missing in February.
That day, Danica told her grandmother that she was going to an after-school dance program. But when her grandmother arrived to pick her up, Danica was not there. She never went to the program.
Instead, Danica went with a fellow student to the mall. She then left her to meet up with another “friend.” Danica never said who her “friend” was and after that, went missing. She was classified by law enforcement as a “voluntary runaway,” rather than a “potential abduction,” making her case less urgent.
Because Danica had never been gone for so long, and with an unknown person, her parents were frantic. Days passed. Community supported vigils were fruitless and Special Operations was called in. We soon developed a list of potential suspects. Through social media, phone calls and a visit to the neighborhood, we spread the word that if Danica were not returned immediately, there would be trouble for those involved in her disappearance.
The next night, she was dropped off near her house, dazed, apparently drugged, and wearing skimpy clothing her parents did not recognize.
Danica’s parents could not reach the law enforcement detective after-hours. Our private investigator answered the call, and talked the parents through getting Danica to a hospital. We worked with the police to arrange for Danica to have a sexual assault nurse exam, and for her and her family to receive support services. We are following up on this case to make sure justice is done.
