An East Bay youth basketball coach was arrested earlier this week in San Joaquin County after an alert parent tipped authorities about messages showing he allegedly tried to meet one of his players with the intention of having sex, police said.
Police arrested the 21-year-old Discovery Bay resident on Tuesday, after he showed up for a meeting with the student, only to be greeted by Tracy police investigators, police spokesman Sgt. Mario Ysit said in a statement. He was arrested on suspicion of contacting a minor with intent to commit certain felonies and arranging a meeting with a minor motivated by sexual purposes, authorities said.
Search warrants served after the arrest also turned up child pornography, and investigators added the possession of it to the coach’s potential charges on Thursday, police said.
The coach was not listed in custody Friday at the San Joaquin County jail.
According to Ysit, a parent contacted police on April 14 to report that her 14-year-old son’s basketball coach was sending sexually suggestive text messages to the teen via a phone application. The basketball program was not affiliated with a school, he said. Undercover detectives continued to text with the coach, who continued to send sexually explicit messages, police said. The coach, believing he was communicating with the player, then agreed to meet the boy in Tracy for what police said was sexual reasons.
